North Devon Classic Climbs Course
05.08.2009
The three day course based in North Devon this year was a huge success.
Regular client Helen brought a friend along for the first day and we climbed at Baggy point, probably north devon's most popular sea cliff.

We spent the first day, getting back into the swing of things with a ascents of two routes at the popular end (with a small audienceof walkers occasionally) Taking gear out and looking at the slab climbing technique we then moved to the far end of baggy point to climb two fantastic routes that are nearly always quiet. Abseiling in with the sea pounding against the cliff underneath your feet is always an exciting experience no matter how often you've done it. The next climbing day Helen and I headed to "wreckers slab" to climb Devon and Cornwall's longest route. At over 400ft in length it is a huge adventure, good climbing but a serious feel with a smattering of loose rock and vegetation thrown in. Not content with one route we headed back to the beach, beating the tide to climb it's neighbor "Smugglers Slab" |

Two massive routes in a day on a big north devon sea cliff is no mean feat and we were in need of rehydration, in the form of the Bush Inn at Morewenstowe. Back to croyde for a pizza and more rehydration before the tents for an early night. The final morning saw us once again at Baggy point, 20mins walk from the campsite. We had time for a couple of routes so we abseiled into the Middle cliff, know as the long rock slab to climb the classic severe "Shangri-La" Helen was climbing extremely well so the last route of the trip we made the most challenging, the 130ft "Lost Horizon" is a great line, climbing cracks right up the highest part of the cliff and graded a respectable "Very Severe 5a" Many regular climbers would find this a real struggle but Helen had great confidenceafter the previous few days and made good work of the climb finishing off a great three days. There are a few more photos from a previous trip to Wreckers slab here |
